Ants are members of the same insect family as bees and wasps, and live in colonies that may contain as many as half a million individuals. That small mound of dirt you see in your yard is often an ant nest consisting of hundreds of interconnected underground cells that can extend up to several feet. Here's a look at some of the types of ants you might find in your backyard or house: Pavement Ants are brown to black ants are about 1/10” long and nest under stones or in cracks in curbs or sidewalks. Pavement ants will make their way indoors for food or water.
  • Fire Ants are red ants that are about ¼” of an inch long, and often create mounds of dirt in your yard. Fire ants are very aggressive and sting by biting with their strong jaws while they sting from the abdomen. When provoked, a single fire ant will sting multiple times. Did you know the first fire ants arrived in the US back in 1930 from a cargo ship that made port right here in Alabama.
  • Carpenter Ants are large black ants growing up to ½” long. Although they usually live outdoors in dead or diseased trees, carpenter ants can destroy a home as they chew nests and passageways into structural wood. Most home infestations occur in wood that is older or has been moisture damaged.
  • Pharaoh Ants are small yellow gold ants with black marks on their back and are 1/16” long. They do not like the cold and are most commonly found in hotels, hospitals and restaurants.
  • Grease Ants are shiny yellow, tan or dark brown 1/16-1/12” in length. Grease ant infestations usually occur during summer months and they will nest in walls or cabinet crevices, baseboards, under countertops and in other hidden areas.
  • Crazy Ants are dark brown to black in color and are about 1/10” long. They get their name from their erratic movements. Crazy ants will travel a long way to find food and can be found living indoors and outside.
  • Little Black Ants are shiny black or dark brown and about 1/8" long.  They nest in woodwork, masonry, soil and rotted wood.  They feed on sweets, meat, vegetable, an other insects.
  • Sugar Ants are a common term used to describe small ants that do not bite, but could be any common species of ant. If you have an ant problem, it is best to call an experience pest control company. Different pest control treatments are effective for different ant species, so you need a pest expert to identify and treat your ant problem.
